senior Tutor

senior Tutor
A professional university title, used in the formal circumstances of an official meeting or by speakers who are habitually very formal. There are nine examples of its use in The Affair, by C.P.Snow, all of them by university colleagues. ‘My dear Senior Tutor’ also occurs. A tutor now tends to be thought of as a teacher, though historically his duties towards his young charges were those of a general guardian.
